Turnouts control

Motors choice

The first step : add motors to control the turnout rails from the digital centrale.

I have chosen the N gauge code 55 point “electrofrog” turnout. The core is conductor to avoid that the train stops.

The core polarisation depends on the turnout position.

To be more realistic, I seek some slow motors.

To sum up :

  • slow motor
  • electrofrog
  • reliability
  • low sound
  • price

To compare :

Attachment Mouvement Conso. Core Noise Price
peco easy quick high no loud cheap
lematec difficult slow ok yes loud cheap
fulgurex (*) difficult slow ok yes loud cheap
tortoise (*) difficult slow low yes silent expensive
conrad difficult quick ok yes silent cheap
seep easy quick high yes loud very cheap

(*) : fulgurex, is equal to lematec
(*) : tortoise motor is big ! (82 mm x 56 mm x 39 mm)

I have chosen the tortoise motors. It’s more expensive, but you can buy per 6 or 12 packs !

Note : to realize this comparator, I need to help from the contributors on the “forum du N”

Decoders choice

With any digital centrale, we can drive the turnout. You need a digital decoder.

Still, you have several solutions.

CDF slow motor decoder 4 motors easy 36 €
LDT S-DEC-4-DC + 4 x LDT DSU 4 motors easy 30 + 4 x 9.90 €
LDT SA-DEC-4-DC 4 motors easy 36.90 €
LDT M-Dec 4 motors easy 48.50 €
SwitchPilot + adaptators 4 motors + 2 out easy 33 €

I think that I’m going to choose the switch pilot.

Finally, the next step is realize the work place and do a test layout.
